Solar Fencing – A Sustainable Way to Protect Farmlands

Tamil Nadu’s farmers often face challenges due to wild animal intrusion — elephants, wild boars, bisons and deer frequently damage crops, resulting in significant losses every year.

To address this, the Government of Tamil Nadu, with support from the Union Government, has introduced the Solar Fencing Units Installation Scheme — an eco-friendly solution to protect agricultural lands using solar energy.

Under this initiative, farmers can install solar-powered fencing systems around their fields with up to 70% subsidy, ensuring both crop safety and wildlife conservation.

Objectives of the Solar Fencing Scheme

The primary goals of the Tamil Nadu Solar Fencing Scheme are:

  • To prevent conflicts between farmers and wild animals.
  • To protect standing crops from damage by animals like wild boars, deer, bison and elephants.
  • To promote the use of renewable solar technology in agriculture.
  • To provide financial support for farmers in implementing clean-energy farm protection systems.

Funding Source and Contribution:

  • Union Government: 60%
  • State Government: 40%

Subsidy & Benefits:

Farmers can avail significant subsidy assistance to install solar fencing systems.

Subsidy Details:

  • All Farmers: 50% Subsidy
  • Small & Marginal Farmers (SC/ST Category): 70% Subsidy

This makes solar fencing an affordable, long-term solution to protect farmlands from animal intrusion while reducing dependence on electric or chemical fencing systems.

Project Coverage Area:

The Solar Fencing Installation Scheme is available in all districts of Tamil Nadu, except Chennai.

This is because the scheme focuses on agricultural and forest-fringe areas, where animal–human conflict is most common — including districts like Coimbatore, Madurai, Dindigul, Nilgiris, Erode, Tirunelveli and Salem.

Project Coverage Area:

Two major types of solar fencing systems are provided under the scheme:

1.Normal Type Solar Fencing Units

  • Designed with 5, 7, or 10 lines of fence wire.
  • Suitable for protecting against animals such as wild boars, deer, bison, and other small to medium-sized wildlife.
  • Operates on solar-powered energizers with controlled electric pulses that deter animals without causing harm.

2.Hanging Type Solar Fencing Units (for Elephants)

  • Includes a special suspended (hanging) structure to handle large animals like elephants.
  • Designed with 5, 7, or 10 lines for extended coverage and higher durability.
  • Ensures safety and humane deterrence through low-voltage electric shocks powered by solar energy.

Eligibility Criteria

  • All farmers in Tamil Nadu with agricultural land are eligible to apply.
  • Priority is given to small and marginal farmers, especially those in wildlife-prone regions.

Officer to Approach

Farmers who wish to apply should contact:

Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of the concerned project district under the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Government of Tamil Nadu.

These officers are responsible for:

  • Site inspection and feasibility verification
  • Approving system specifications
  • Coordinating subsidy disbursement

 Why Choose Solar Fencing?

Solar fencing systems are self-powered, using solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate electricity for the energizer unit that powers the fence.

Unlike traditional electric fencing, which relies on continuous grid power, solar fencing is completely off-grid, making it ideal for remote farmlands.

 Key Advantages:

  • Operates entirely on renewable solar power
  • Low maintenance cost
  • Works efficiently even in rural or forest-fringe zones
  • Provides non-lethal protection against animals
  • Reduces dependency on manual guarding or electric supply
